What is a Pre-school?
A place where children learn through play. So many times we hear people comment, "oh they only play".
Yes they do, and it is the aim of our Pre-school to give each child a full and satisfying play experience that will help them to grow and develop physically, socially and emotionally, so they are ready for school and beyond.
We aim to help children · · · Find that learning is not a burden imposed on children by adults, but an exciting expression of children’s own instinctive attempts to explore their world. Children then discover an essential ingredient for success - at school and beyondLearn to operate as part of a groupTake pleasure in the company of other children and adults
Admittance of 2 Year Olds
Since September 1997 we have admitted 2 year olds on two mornings each week, Mondays and Thursdays. KCC regulations require that any group (nursery or pre-school) with 2-year-old children in attendance must have a staff ratio of one adult to every four children. Our staff: children ratio on Mondays and Thursdays will be one to four and one to six on other sessions.
These requirements do not apply to state schools where the induction class can have well over this number with probably only one teacher and assistant. We realize that today very often parents need pre-school provision for their children at an earlier age and if we find there is a demand we will consider increasing the days available.
The Role of Parents
Our Pre-school recognizes parents as the first and most important educators of their young children and parents are welcome to
work in the group with the children
to assist with fundraising
to take part in the management of the pre-school
to attend meetings and training courses, workshops and conferences organized by the Advisory Service Kent
Our Pre-school could not run without parents. Can you sew, bring in a pet, read a story, hammer in a nail, wash dolls’ clothes, type a letter, or help in any way. All help is welcome.
Our Committee is also run by parents. Why not join in and have a say in your child’s education.
Special Needs
The numbers of adults present in our Pre-school enables us to provide individual attention for each child. Each child is able to progress at her/his own rate in all areas of development, and this is true for children with and without disabilities or learning difficulties. We are experienced in working in close liaison with professionals across the range of special needs. If you would like to discuss the group’s ability to meet your own child’s special needs, please talk to the Pre-school manager, supervisor, SENCO or your child’s Keyworker.
We are members of the Pre-school Learning Alliance, previously known as the Pre-school Playgroups Association.
This is a National organisation, which exists to help pre-schools, nurseries, parent and toddler groups. The Alliance produces its own magazines and publications and employs KCC to advise on educational, social and financial matters for its member groups..
Child Protection
We intend to create in W/K Pre-school, an environment in which children are safe from abuse and in which any suspicion of abuse is promptly and appropriately dealt with.
As a registered provider, we have a duty and responsibility to observe and record any changes in a child’s behaviour or misdemeanour. It may be necessary to consult with a variety of agencies when there is any suspicion of abuse, Parents may not always be informed.
Registered Authority
Pre-school is registered with the Office for Standards in Education who complete a statutory education and nursery inspection. All persons working on the Pre-school premises must complete Police and Health checks made by the Criminal Record Bureau.
